Jonathan Hichens, Training and Operations Director at insightEx Ltd, will be presenting at Hazardex in the Regions: Grangemouth on 18 June. He will discuss the release of Edition 6 of IEC 60079-14 and what it means for Ex d Cables and Cable Glands.

The release of Edition 6 of IEC 60079-14 marks a significant evolution in the global approach to hazardous area installations. As a “code of practice,” this standard outlines the requirements for the design, selection, and installation of electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres. With the transition from Edition 5 to Edition 6 now underway across IEC member countries, understanding these updates is essential for Ex equipment manufacturers, contractors, and end-users alike.

This presentation will focus specifically on what these changes mean for Ex d cable and cable gland selection and installation. One of the most critical challenges is the complete reorganisation of the standard’s structure—making direct, clause-by-clause comparison nearly impossible. To address this, the session will highlight the most impactful updates and explain how these changes affect practical implementation in the field but also more critically, the impact in the upstream activities. It is no longer just an installer issue!

Whether you’re specifying equipment, overseeing installation, or maintaining hazardous area infrastructure, this presentation is designed to help you stay ahead of regulatory changes and make informed SAFE decisions.
