The nominees for the Contribution to Safety Award are: a. Dynaco –
High-speed roll-up door
Dynaco's high-speed roll-up doors for ATEX Zones 1/21 and 2/22 help add value for work flows and create a safe work environment which is mandatory in hazardous environment. They allow for easy partitioning of different zones, thus limiting the surface area that must meet Atex requirements to the absolute minimum. They have a reduced footprint and require little space and come with an official certificate for the complete door, avoiding extra administrative work.

b. Saft – Li-ion cells and IS 1s Protection Circuit
The MP 176065 ise and MP 174565 ise prismatic Li-ion cells were launched during 2020 with the first applications for portable equipment in hazardous locations following soon after. Both cells meet the requirement of IEC 60079-0 and IEC 60079-11 and are rated for ambient environments of up to +60°C, with a Temperature Class of T4 (>100°C & =135°C). The cells can be further safety enhanced when constructed as single or multi cell “batteries” with the addition of a 1S Intrinsic Electronic Protection Circuit, which provides each individual cell (up to three cells in series) with multiple protection modes and infallible components limiting fault current and protecting against short circuit, over temperature, under temperature. At battery level, in addition to the 1S protection circuit, the top portion of the cell is resin encapsulated and carries an additional insulating sleeve thus meeting the requirements as IS component.

c. Teledyne FLIR – FLIR Cx5 thermal imaging camera
The newly launched FLIR Cx5 thermal imaging camera is ATEX approved allowing instant inspections without the need for a hot working permit. This means any hint of an electrical or mechanical fault can be inspected instantly with non-contact testing before needing to shut-down the operation. The £1750 (ex-VAT) camera connects through the cloud to free reporting software to build-up a history of preventative/predictive maintenance images.

d. TWTG – NEON Vibration Sensor
Historically, rotating assets are monitored at intervals, often monthly with manual vibration measurement to verify an asset is correctly functioning and possibly detect a failure early. During this snapshot, vibrations are measured over a broad spectrum and then analysed by an expert to determine whether further action is needed. While this process helps to manage unexpected downtime, it has a number of significant downsides: It is extremely labour intensive. Substantial gaps between snapshots may not catch all potential issues in time, risking possible catastrophic failure taking place in between the checks carried out. Total Refinery Antwerp has tested TWTG’s NEON Vibration Sensors to address and improve on the typical downsides of vibration measurement. TotalEnergies Reliability Engineer Franky Oste has this to say: "TWTG’s NEON Vibration Sensor gives us better use of our time. We don’t need to go out when the sensor indicates all levels are OK; Spending time only on the assets with actual problems." The IECEx / ATEX Zone 1 certified wireless devices are helping improve safety for operators and creating additional efficiencies for operational sites.

e. VEGA Controls – VEGAPULS 6X radar level sensor
VEGAPULS 6X is a universal sensor for continuous level measurement of liquids and bulk solids under all process conditions. It combines safety and security with SIL 2/3 and IEC 62443-4-2. Benefits include exact measuring results independent of process conditions, maintenance-free operation through non-contact measuring principle, and application-oriented configuration enables a simple device selection.
